The plan of The Tomb of Merenptah:

  • The tomb has a 160-meter-long corridor to the Royal Burial Chamber.
  • Tomb area = 2472 square meters.
  • The tomb of The king Merenptah “Egyptian Pharaohs kings” is the second largest tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
  • The tomb is 100% incomplete, with inscriptions and drawings of the cemetery finished except for the decorations on the walls at the end of the vestibule after the burial chamber.
  • The columns of the entrance to the burial chamber were broken and vandalized by the ancient Egyptian workers due to a technical error, as the first coffin was larger than the opening of the door of the burial chamber.

Funerary Chamber:

  • The burial chamber contains decorations damaged because of the flooding of the Nile, where there are inscriptions of a group of kings and astronomical drawings drawn on the vaulted ceiling of the room.

  • The inscriptions of the tomb on the walls are the same religious and ritual decorations on the walls of the tomb of King Ramses II and King Sethi I.

  • You will see an inscription of the king of Merenptah on the walls of the door of the water well hall and the God of Osiris on the walls of the second gate, as well as an inscription containing a group of ancient Egyptian deities on the left wall “Imesty, Dwa Mut Ef, Anubis, Isis and Neith” and on the right side “Hapi, Qebeh Snu Ef, Anubis, Nephtis and Selket”.
  • You will see in the next room containing 2 columns an inscription of the God Osiris on the left wall of the room, then an inscription of the king offering offerings to the god Osiris and drawings of the Book of the Gates on the walls during hours No. 4, 5 and 6.

What are the most important inscriptions in the corridors of the cemetery?

  1. The inscription on the left wall of the second corridor representing the goddess Isis and the jackal Anubis god of the Necropolis in return the Goddess on the right is Nephtis.
  2. On the wall of the third passage, we find the solar boat that was engraved during his journey to the other world with a group of ancient Egyptian gods, then on the opposite wall an inscription of the Solar Boat and standing on top of the God Horus and two gods.
  3. An inscription on the lintel of the door representing the disc of the sun and the jars in the shape of a human being with a ram’s head and the inscription of the Goddess Isis and de the Goddess Nephtis.
  4. There is a room just after the third corridor containing inscriptions of the God Anubis, with two people in front of him to serve the God Osiris, and the opposite wall contains the inscription of the God Horus, with two people in front of him.
  5. There is a small side room containing an inscription of the king before the God Osiris and notes that its ceiling is incomplete.

The coffin of King Merenptah:  

  • The coffin consisting of 4 coffins was discovered nesting in one another, then the king’s mummy in the last small coffin.
  • The king’s coffin was found open and made of pink granit.
  • The mummy of King Merenptah was found with a group of royal mummies in 1898 AD in a hiding place inside the tomb of King Amenophis II in the Valley of the King of Luxor by archaeologist Victor Laurette.
  • The width of the first coffin = 213cm.
  • The king’s coffin consisted of 4 very large granit coffins and the fourth coffin was made of calcite stone on top of each other.
  • You will see the cover of King Merenptah’s coffin in a small room next to the burial chamber.
