King Ramesses XI

• Egypt was known during the reign of King Ramses XI as a period of security and political and economic stability.
• There were two powers in his time, the Eastern power, the Persians, and the other, the Western power, which is the Greeks.
• Those two forces are opposing forces to each other and they wanted to own the land, especially the Fertile Crescent, an area located between Mesopotamia and the Levant.
• Therefore, Egypt was under the eyes of those powers, and because of the collapsed state of Egypt at some time, the Persians seized some of the eastern provinces of Egypt.
The expropriation was due to Egypt’s weakness and its internal condition, in addition to the lack of interest of its kings in defending the country and their weakness regarding the repeated raids of the Persians.
• At the end of the reign of Ramses XI, one of the Egyptian army forces, “Harihor”, took advantage of the rule of Upper Egypt away from Ramses’ control.

Facts

• King Ramses XI was buried in northern Egypt, and “Smendes”, one of the military leaders, assumed the throne.
• Smendes also undertook the burial ceremonies of King Ramses XI, and ruled Lower Egypt in addition to establishing the Twenty-first Dynasty.
• Smendes also ruled the northern capital “Tanis”.
• He tried to control central Egypt and Upper Egypt, but his attempt was unsuccessful, as the priests of Amon took over the rule of Thebes in that period.
• The tomb of Ramses XI is known internationally as kv4 and is located in the eastern valley in the Valley of the Kings.
• The cemetery was not finished, and the mummy was not buried there, so that the period of the establishment of the state of the priests in Thebes, “Benuzum I”, the high priest of Amun, decided to seize the tomb.
• The purpose of expropriating the tomb of King Ramses XI was to make it for himself, and there is a special cartouche engraved inside the tomb that indicates this.
• The priest returned from that idea and was not buried with it either, in addition to King Ramses XI.
• The cemetery became famous compared to other tombs of the Pharaohs’ kings, because it was the last tomb that was built in the Valley of the Kings, even as it was the first cemetery where visitors were received.
