  • The Seventeenth Dynasty of Egypt witnessed the Second Intermediate Period of Egypt, and this title was given to that era by scholars of history and Egyptology.
  • That period is between the period of the end of the Old Kingdom of Egypt with the end of the rule of King Pepi II of the 6th Dynasty of Egypt and the beginning of The New Kingdom in ancient Egypt with the rule of King Ahmose I with his wife Queen Ahmose Nefertar of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt.
  • This period was characterized by the spread of chaos, decline, and Revolutions in Ancient Egypt, and Egypt was under the rule of the Hyksos.
  • The Hyksos took Avaris in the eastern Delta, the capital of ancient Egypt, according to the Geography of ancient Egypt.
  • None of the members of that family were called Pharaoh because they were not of Egyptian descent, so they were called King and did not receive the Coronation of the Pharaohs.
  • It is also said that during that period a very severe famine occurred in Egypt, and Joseph bin Yacoub, peace be upon him, was instrumental in resolving it.

Who ruled the Seventeenth Dynasty of Egypt?

  • The first individual, King Sekhemre Wahkhau Rahotep, who was the founder of that family, ruled Egypt from 1580 to 1576 BC.
    After that comes King Sobek emsaf I. He ruled Egypt from 1576 to 1571 BC and married “Nub imhat.”
  • Sobek Imsaf II is the third member of that family. He ruled Egypt in 1571 and married “Nub Khas.” His royal tomb was robbed during the reign of King Ramesses IX of the Twentieth Egyptian Dynasty, known as The Ramesside Period, by Ancient Egyptian Grave Robbers.
  • Intef VI took over the rule of Egypt in 1571 BC in Seventeenth Dynasty of Egypt and was buried in the cemetery of Dra’ Abu al-Naga, among the cemeteries of the nobles in Luxor, “Theban Tombs,” “Thebes,” in southern Egypt.
    King Intef VII ruled Egypt from Thebes in 1568 BC and married “Sepkemsaf”.
  • Sekhemre, or King Antef VII, was also one of the kings of that dynasty. He ruled Egypt from 1566 to 1559 BC, and married Haankhes.
  • Seqenenre Taa I was one of the kings of the Seventeenth Dynasty of Egypt. He ruled Egypt from 1559 to 1588 BC. The king married “Teteshri.”
  • After that comes King Seqenenre Taa II, who succeeded his father Seqenenre I. The king ruled Egypt from 1558 to 1554 BC and married Iahhotep.
  • The last member of that family, King Kamose, ruled Egypt from 1554 to 1549 BC, and Kamel married Aahotep II.
