Temple of Philae in Aswan Egypt – Temple of Isis

Date of construction: 690 BC J.-C.

The reason for choosing the name Philae.

Philae refers to the Greek word “Philos” and means love, and the temple is named after the palace of Anas Al-Wogoud to the presence of the Arabs.

The origin of the name of the temple among the Arabs as the Palace of Anas Al-Wogoud, due to the fact that the daughter of the minister loved the son of the king, when the minister knew it, he sent his daughter to the temple to keep her away from the son of the king, but over time, the son of the king continued to look for her until he met her on the island of Philae in the temple.

What is the reason for the construction of the Temple of Philae?

The main purpose of the temple was to worship the goddess Isis in the 3rd century BC, where she was one of the most important religious beliefs of Pharaohs of all ages until Greco-Roman times in Ancient Egypt.

The temple of Philae was built in Ptolemaic times and then developed in Roman times, where it was dedicated to the worship of Isis and Hathor, where King Nechtanebo IEgyptian Pharaohs kings” developed it and made inscriptions and drawings on the walls of the temple.

The interior plan of the Temple of Philae:

It was built during the reign of King Ptolemy II, and then developed by King Ptolemy III, where you will find a 50-feet-high pylon and in front of the pylon two granit statues in the shape of two lions as well as columns whose capitals bear botanical motifs.

When you advance you will see in the second courtyard a second pylon smaller than the first and then the hypostyle room that guides you to the inner and covered part of the temple.

Your temple tour begins at the gate of King Ptolemy II’s chapel, where you’ll see two pink granit statues and 2 pink granit obelisks.

You will see hieroglyph texts based on Pharaonic obelisks, which played an important role in helping Jean François Champollion decipher hieroglyphics as was the case with the Rosetta Stone and learn more about the ancient Egyptian language.

You will see pharaonic inscriptions on the first pylon telling the legend of Isis and drawings on the wall of the east tower of King Dionysus holding enemies, as well as other drawings of the king presenting the crown to the gods Horus and Nephtis and another view of the king offering incense to Horus and Isis.

You will see the House of Birth inside the temple, where the kings of the Ptolemaic period were interested in leaving evidence about their legitimacy inside the Egyptian temples, which is the construction of a special house that tells the legend of the birth of the king of the goddess Isis.

On the walls you will see Falcon-shaped Horus wearing a double crown and Isis carrying Horus the child in his arms.

One of the religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptians was that the king performed ceremonial rituals for the birth of Horus.

Then, head to The Hypostyle Hall and start your tour to see the rest of the temple and its monuments.

The island of Philae contains pharaonic statues of pharaoh kings as well as a collection of ancient temples:

  1. The ruins of the king are cleaned of the 25th dynasty.

The chapel of Nekhtanebo:

You will see a large hall with 14 columns with unique pharaonic inscriptions, when you enter the vestibule of the hall you will see inscriptions of the king offering offerings to the gods as well as the columns of Hathor surmounted by composite capitals.

A hypostyle room, containing 14 columns, the walls of this room are decorated with inscriptions of the king, sacrificing many things to the gods, the walls of this chapel are connected to the Hathoric columns and surmounted by botanical sculptures.

The chapel of Hathor in the temple of Philae:

After finishing visiting the Temple of Isis, you will find the Chapel of Hathor, where you will find inscriptions for the musicians and drawings of the God Bes the God of Joy as he plays the tambourine and dances as the pharaohs once thought.

Temple of Imhotep:

A little further on is a small chapel at the northern end of the Ptolemaic cult, then head to the open courtyard known as  the “Mamisi” birth  house.

After the construction of the high dam, the water increased significantly in Lake Nasser and covered all parts of the temple, the Egyptian government moved all parts of the temple to the Agilkia Island and the rest of the surrounding islands to preserve the ancient Pharaonic heritage.

To the southeast of the temple you will find Trajan’s kioskPharaoh’s Bed” dating from Roman times, where you will find 14 columns in two rows with entrances from the east and west, you will see pharaonic inscriptions of Emperor Trajan offering to the gods Isis and Osiris.

The Rescue Operation of the temple of Isis:

After the construction of the high dam, water from the Nile flooded the temple throughout the year, in addition to the problem of electricity production that emits water ripples, causing a rise in the water level of 3 meters throughout the year, causing the erosion of the stone.

The Egyptian government has joined international organizations to protect the Pharaonic temple that would be transported after its dismantling and resettlement on the Agilkia Island in Aswan.

The rescue operation began in 1972 and was in the following stages:

  1. Installation of more than 3,000 panels at the bottom of the Nile and striking of reservoirs to make a temporary dam that reserves the waters of the Nile
  2. The 12-metre barrier was completed two years later.
  3. A mixture of washed sand and water was added to the quarry area 5,000 meters away and then connected by pipes to support the steel against water pressure.
