Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities

• The ministry was known in the past as the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, which is the ministry responsible for planning and organizing tourism business.
• The Ministry was established by Public Decision No. 1441 in 1966.
• After that came Republican Decree No. 712 in 1981 AD.
• One of the Ministry’s objectives is to work on stimulating tourism and preserving historical sites.
• Tourism and antiquities were separated and tourism merged with the Ministry of Housing.
• The Ministry of Tourism became independent in November 1966.
• The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation was merged in April 1974, but they separated after that in October 1974.
• It returned again as an independent ministry in March 1976, and tourism and aviation remained until it separated again in October of 1993.

Former Tourism Ministers

• Dr. Muhammad Abdel Qader Hatem, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, from March 1964 to September 1965.
• Also Dr. Aziz Ahmed Yassin, from October 1965 until September 1966.
• Mr. Amin Mustafa Shaker assumed the ministry in November 1966 until March 1968.
• Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafez Ghanem assumed the ministry from March 1968 until 1969.
• Mr. Muhammad Awad Al-Qoni took over the ministry from September 1969 until November 1970.
Also, Prof. Dr. Ahmed El-Sayed Darwish took over from November 1970 until 1971 AD.
• Professor Ibrahim Najeeb Ibrahim took office from September 1971 until January 1972 AD.
• Dr. Muhammad Zaki Hashem took over from January 1972 to 1973.
• Mr. Ismail Fahmy, from March 1973 to 1973.
• Ibrahim Najeeb Ibrahim took over again, starting from March 1976 until 1977.
• Mr. Moheb Ramzy Esteno took office from February 1977 until October 1978 AD.
• Dr. Mahmoud Amin Abdel Hafez came after that, starting from October 1978 until May 1980.
• The next one is Mr. Ali Jamal Al-Nazer from May 1980 until January 1982.
• Mr. Adel Ibrahim Taher assumed the ministry from 1982 until August 1982.
• Mr. Tawfiq Abdo Ismail came after him, starting from August 1982 until 1984.
• Prof. Dr. Wajih Muhammad Shendi from July 1984 to 1985 AD.
• Dr. Fouad Abdel Latif Sultan took over the ministry from September 1985 to October 1993.
• The current minister is Prof. Dr. Khaled Ahmed Al-Anani, starting from December 2019 until August 2022.

Former Ministers of Antiquities

• After the separation of the Ministry of Tourism in September 1966, the Antiquities Authority returned to the Minister of Culture.
• The affiliate moved again as a body affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Information in March 1994.
• The Ministry of Antiquities became independent from July 2013.
• Prof. Dr. Zahi Abbas Hawass assumed the Ministry of Antiquities from January 2011 until July 2011.
• Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Ali took office from December 2011 until May 2013.
• Also Prof. Dr. Ahmed Issa Ahmed from May 2013 until July 2013.
• Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Ali took over again from July 2013 until June 2014.
• After that, Prof. Mamdouh Gad El-Damaty came from June 2014 to March 2016.
• Prof. Dr. Khaled Ahmed Al-Anani took over from March 2016 until 2019.
The objectives of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities
• The first objective is to activate incoming tourism in order to support human relations.
• The ministry is also activating tourism and raising citizens’ awareness of the importance of the Egyptian heritage, in addition to urging more connection with civilization.
• The Ministry is also working on establishing museums and holding antiquities exhibitions.
• The ministry also seeks to discover antiquities in addition to restoring, registering, securing and preserving them. The ministry also conducts archaeological studies and research.
• The ministry is also working on developing national participation to deepen the tourism industry, in addition to integrating related sectors in the tourism work.
• In order for the ministry to achieve its goals, it draws up a policy that helps in rationalizing performance and directing it to sectors and agencies related to tourism and antiquities.
• It also issues licenses related to any activity aimed at increasing tourism in accordance with the established laws.
• In addition to the Ministry’s supervision over tourism services and activities, in addition to monitoring hotel and tourist establishments and tourism companies.
• The Ministry follows up the excavation and excavation works, in addition to establishing and supervising museums, in addition to preserving the historical status of these antiquities.
