King Menkaure Facts:

King Menkaure or Menkaure is a member of the Fourth Egyptian Dynasty, which dates back to the era of the Old Kingdom. He is the owner of the third pyramid, the Pyramid of Menkaure, which is part of the group of The Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx of Giza in Giza. Pyramid of Menkaure, the pyramid group of Menkaure, which contains the Mummy of the sons and wives of King Menkaure as one of the Egyptian Tombs, a statue of black basalt, the most important Ancient Egyptian Metallurgy, with the God Hathor and the God Bat, the most famous ancient Egyptian deities within the Ancient Egyptian religion, a complete statue with his wife, Queen Khamerernebty II, a statue Greywack, a fragmented alabaster statue head to indicate the development of Sculpture in Ancient Egypt, a basalt cylindrical seal to indicate the development of Industry in ancient Egypt, a fragmented tripartite statue, a huge alabaster statue.

  • King Menkaure lived in the era starting from 2530 BC.
  • King Menkaure married Princess Khamarnabti II and gave birth to Shepseskaf, Juan In Ra, Khent Kaos, and Sekhemre.
  • It is said that the daughter of King Menkera “Rakhit Ra” is the wife of “Men Kao Ra” and he is the eldest son of the king, and it is said that he died before his father.
  • The royal court of Menkaure contained half-brothers of King Menkaure, including “Neb im sister, Dua En Ra, Nikaure” and all of them held the position of vizier.

What was King Menkaure known for?

  • Writers indicate that the reign of King Menkare lasted for 28 years, beginning in 2532 and 2504 BC.
  • But there is a papyrus called the Turin Papyrus, the most famous Ancient Egyptian Papyrus, which states that the duration of King Menkaure’s rule was only 18 years.
  • The latter period is believed by Egyptian Monuments and Egyptologists.
  • The Pyramid of Menkare was built next to the Pyramid of Khafre, which is 66 meters high. Therefore, it ranks smaller in terms of height compared to the Great Pyramid of Giza, which was built during the era of King Khufu and Khafre.

What is special about the Menkaure Pyramid?

  • The height of King Menkaure pyramid is currently 61 meters, or 200 feet, and the base comes with 108.5 meters, or 356 feet.
  • The tilt angle reaches 51 degrees, and limestone from Tura was used, while granite from Aswan was used.
  • The pyramid comes with courses made of red granite, while the outside of the pyramid was encased in a similar manner to the pyramids of Khufu and Khafre using limestone.
  • Inside the pyramid there is a vault made of granite to bury the mummy of King Menkaure inside the Pharaonic Ancient Egyptian Coffins, next to it is the Funerary Equipment, and inside it Ushabti Statue, Pharaonic Scarab, ornaments and royal jewellery, indicating the development of Mummification in ancient Egypt and the Medicine in ancient Egypt. There are also corridors written on the walls in the Ancient Egyptian Language, texts and spells known as Pyramid Texts.
  • When descending into the pyramid from the inside there are approximately four designated rooms.
  • A coffin made of wood containing Menkaure’s name was found and is currently located in The British Museum in London.

What was the Menkaure Valley Temple used for?

  • Many statues were found in the area of the funerary Mortuary Temples complex and they belonged to King Menkaure.
  • The structure and core of the temple were made of limestone, and the floors were made of granite.
  • Raw brick was also used and the stone blocks used in the walls of Egyptian Temples amounted to approximately 220 tons.
  • It is said that the heaviest block was brought from Aswan and weighs approximately 31 tons or more.
  • The construction of the temple was completed during the reign of King Shepseskaf, who is the successor of King Menkaure and is said to be his son.

Ushabti Statue

  • The word in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics means “the answerer.” It began to be used beginning in the era of the Middle Kingdom in ancient Egypt, the beginning of the rule of the kings of the Eleventh Dynasty of Egypt, especially the period of King Mentuhotep I. It was placed next to the king’s mummy to serve him in the afterlife.
  • Texts were discovered in The Book of the Dead in Chapter 6 that say, “You make the lazy person raise his hand and work for the deceased.”
  • Hundreds of them are being added next to the king’s mummy and inside the royal tomb.
  • They are small-sized statues representing servants and workers serving the deceased in the other world.
