● The oldest of these inscriptions dates back to the Middle Kingdom (1650-2034 BC). In addition to inscriptions during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut. And King Thutmose III, who tells one of the rocks a story in which one of the building supervisors was able to extract six granite obelisks.
● The most important of these rock inscriptions was the famine plate, and it is likely that it was engraved 4,600 years ago.

The most famous rock carvings on the island of Suhail

● The Famine Tablet is the most famous of these rock inscriptions. It contains texts engraved on a rectangular piece of granite rock that tells of a crisis that occurred at some time and the efforts of the then king to solve it. The texts were written on the tablet in hieroglyphics in 32 vertical rows.
● This painting is located on the top of the eastern hill of the island. It was inscribed in the Ptolemaic period, but the events of the famine had occurred before it was narrated on the tablet by about 2,500 years. Some archaeologists believe that the story may not be true, and it is inspired by the imagination of the local priests of Khnum.
● The painting tells about three Egyptian gods, namely: the god (Khnum), a man-god with two horns and a ram’s head, and the ancients believed that he created man from the silt of the Nile, and both of the gods are Satis and Anuket, the gods of the Nile and the flood.
● At the top of the painting is a scene depicting King Djoser presenting offerings to the god Khnum, his wife Sat, and his daughter Anaqet.
● The events of the story take place during the era of the Pharaonic Third Dynasty, when the Nile water decreased, so drought and famine prevailed throughout the country during the reign of King Djoser for seven years, which led to narrow conditions in the country to the extent that this situation affected King Djoser himself, so the king sent messages to ask for help From the ruler of the upper country, the prince of the Nubians, and the head of the temples of the south, as indicated by the chief priest by offering sacrifices and gifts to the owners of the current Abu or Aswan region. Until the king saw the god Khnum in a dream, so he ordered that gifts and offerings be directed to him, and expanded his influence and donated a lot of agricultural land for the benefit of the god Khnum.
