The stages of the construction of the Valley of the Queens in Luxor:

18th dynastie:

The tomb of Princess Ahmes Oli is the royal tomb of the Valley of the Queens, daughter of King Seknen Re and Queen  Sat Djehouty

The design of the tombs consisted of a corridor, a room, and a mummy funerary column, with some royal tombs containing more than one burial.

Royal cartouches were discovered for the sons of the kings of ancient Egypt, such as the son of King Thutmosis III, the daughter of King Ti, the daughter of Queen Hatshepsut and  other princes and princesses of the 18th dynasty.

19th dynasty:

It was a different period from the 18th dynasty, when only the queens of the royal family were buried.

▸ Contains the tombs of the wives of King Ramses I, King Seti I and King Ramses II.

  • QV 38 is the first tomb to be prepared for the queens of the 19th dynastie

The kings built the tombs and left them empty, until the mummy was buried, and the cartouches of the queen’s name were then written at the entrance to the royal tomb.

20th dynasty:

  • King Ramses III was interested in building distinctive tombs for his wives and sons in the Valley of the Queens
  • King Ramses VI built 6 special tombs for his wives and children.
  • The looting of royal tombs, treasures and jewelry began in the time of King Ramses III.

 Third Pharaonic Intermediate Period and beyond:

  • Kings, queens and some nobles during the 20th dynasty enlarged many royal tombs to accommodate more than one burial inside the same tomb.
  • In Coptic times until the 7th century AD, royal tombs were inhabited and an inscription with Christian symbols was added to the walls.
  • Tombs were used in Ptolemaic times for more than one burial of nobles and princesses.
  • In Roman times, the Valley of the Queens was enlarged to enlarge the tombs of the nobles of the royal court.
