Who built the Temple of King Sethi I?

The temple was built during the reign of King Sethi I but he did not complete it. After his death, his son, King Ramses II, took care  to finish the entire building in memory of his father.

Why was the funerary Temple of Seti I built?

  1. The main objective is to build a funerary temple for King Sethi I and his father, King Ramses I “Egyptian Pharaohs kings.
  2. Worship and reverence of the ancient Egyptian gods, where it was dedicated to the worship of God Amon Ra and his wife Mut and their son Khonsu.

Facts about the Temple of Seti I:

  1. The temple contains a royal palace and a temple built in the time of King Ramses I.
  2. The first funerary temples built in the 19th Pharaonic dynasty.
  3. The temple was 158 meters long and is now 47 meters long and 50 meters wide.

The architectural design and interior plan of the Temple of Seti I:

The outer courtyard of the temple and the buildings in it have been demolished and only the main structure, which includes the worship and the funerary halls, will be seen 9 huge columns with papyrus style capitals in addition to another column dilapidated because of erosion and climatic conditions through the ages.

The architectural design of the temple from the inside is 3 doors, where the right door reaches the room of King Ramses II and the middle door of the hypostyle room and the last door of the chapel of King Ramses I.

Small hypostyle hall:

  • The hall contains columns with pharaonic papyrus style.
  • The hall leads to 3 other halls for King Sethi I.

When you go through The Hypostyle Hall, you will see a square room, then the main structure of the temple, then a hall based on 4 demolished columns and containing simple inscriptions of King Sethi I then small halls.

You will see a private hall dedicated to King Ramses I with 2 columns with papyrus style capitals and then a small sacred lake.

On the north side of the temple wall are ruins of brick buildings that were used as a warehouse.

The architectural design of the temple had a large courtyard and two pylons, but the current situation destroyed the bases in the first and second courtyards of the two pylons and only the main structure remained.

You can access the shrine, which was dedicated to King Sethi I and the cult of the Theban Triad through the middle entrance.

The main entrance contains 6 pharaonic columns and a wide courtyard, three Chapels dedicated to the sacred boats of the cult of the Triad of Thebes, then an anchor base with 4 columns with small side chapels.

The inscriptions engraved on the walls of the Temple of Seti I:

  • There is an inscription on the walls of the God Hapi, the “God of the Nile“, carrying offerings.
  • You will see an inscription of King Ramses II offering offerings to the god Amun in the presence of the god Min.
  • There is a distinctive inscription of Amun’s boat in the presence of a group of temple priests.
  • You will see an inscription of King Ramses II in the small hall of columns dancing before God Min, then the inscription of King Sethi I standing in front of a group of ancient Egyptian deities “Amon Ra, Khnum, Atum, Monthu “to get the sign of life and the emblem of the jubilee.
  • There is an inscription of King Ramses II in the position of kneeling before God Amon Ra and King Sethi I.
  • You will see a distinctive inscription on the walls of the outer chambers depicting King Sethi I offering offerings to ancient Egyptian deities.
  • You will see an inscription of King Sethi I offering offerings to the Triad formed by Osiris, Isis and Horus and to the Triad of Thebes formed by Amun, Mut and Khonsu on the wall of the third chamber.
  • You will see the inscription of the purification ritual of King Sethi I in the presence of the two gods Thoth and Horus on the wall of the second chamber and another inscription sitting the king on the throne and behind the goddess Maat in the presence of the god Horus.
  • You will see an inscription of the king sitting on the throne in the presence of a group of ancient Egyptian gods “Thoth, Amun, Mut, Sekhmet, and Ptah” and a drawing of the sacred enclosure.
