The establishment of the library dates back to Ptolemaic times by the architect Demitrius Valiri, where construction was carried out in the royal quarter, King Ptolemy III and other kings were interested in compiling more than 500,000 books inside the library.

Library of Alexandria

You can watch several shows and panoramas in more than one language inside the library, such as the main presentation on the history of the library, president Sadate’s panorama of the October 6 war, the presentation of the 100 years of the creation of Heliopolis, a presentation to explain the book of the dead, a presentation of the history of the Nile River and the sweetness of the Congo River.

The library also offers special programs to learn about the history of the Library of Alexandria between past, present, and future, a dedicated program for visits for school children and young university students, as well as a family program to get to know the library in its entirety.

The Library of Alexandria provides a special section called Knowledge Embassies, which has sub-centers in all governorates of Egypt to provide knowledge and scientific support to students, members of the training organization, campus pioneers and researchers, where it provides complete digital copies of all books contained in the library so far free of charge in its branches.

The Library Museums:  

During your library tour, you can visit the BA Museum Room to see a collection of rare art works and a photo and art gallery, as well as to see the planetarium center, which features scientific content.

Library of Alexandria – Museum of President Sadat:

It is considered one of the permanent museums of the Library of Alexandria, a complete library documented on the history of the late President Mohamed Anwar Sadat, will see inside of the museum all his decorations and a collection of gifts he received such as gold and silver dishes as well as medals and military uniforms, in particular the uniform he wore on the day of his death and his article of 6 October 1981.

You will also find in the museum the radio of President Sadat and all the books he read and his staff, for which he was famous, a collection of swords, shields, a door, coats that he personally kept, and more personal belongings of the late president, the man of  war  and peace.

Museum of Rare Books and Manuscripts:

Permanent museums of the Library of Alexandria and you can see through a collection of rare manuscripts of world maps and some archaeological books, especially for those looking for information.

Museum of Antiquities – Pharaonic Civilization:

It houses a collection of pieces of Pharaohs antiquities  from the Roman, Byzantine and Hellenistic periods, as well as a collection of statues found during the construction of the library.

Opened in 2002 and containing 1,133 pieces, where pieces that were discovered   in 1995 during the excavations and construction of the library, the museum was technically developed for display and lighting and maps to explain the History Of Egyptian each piece of antiquities in Arabic, English and French.

Museum of the History of Science:

It is considered one of the museums of the permanent Library of Alexandria and a complete presentation of the history of Egypt is achieved by the beginning of the ancient Egyptian Pharaonic civilization, then the stage of the Hellenistic era, then the history of Islamic civilization in the Middle Ages.

Library of Alexandria – Exhibitions at the BA:

The Arab Folklore Exhibition which is a “permanent exhibition” to present paintings sponsored by Al-Nimr and Abdul Ghani Abu Al-Ain.

The Knights of Heaven exhibition: it is a “permanent exhibition” to present a collection of ancient astronomical instruments used by the Arabs in the Middle Ages.

The Exhibition of the Press of Bolaq: You will see the first Egyptian printing house, which was found in the printing house  of Bolaq under Sultan Muhammad Ali in 1820 AD.

Exhibition of Dr. Mohammed Awad “Permanent Exhibition”:

From the 15th to the 19th century, you will see a distinctive collection of rare photographs and maps of artists who passed through Alexandria, as well as photographs of Alexandria from the 19th to the 20th century, and more documents collected by Dr. Mohammed Awad at the Faculty of Engineering of Alexandria and founder of the Alexandria Heritage Preservation Fund.

Exhibition of Shadi Abdelsalam « Permanent exhibition:

The exhibition opened in 2005 and includes a collection of paintings, sketches, sequences from the film of the Momie, a library, furniture and special collections of Shadi Abdelsalam, who won the Gog Sadol Prize in 1970 for the production of the film The Mummy, as well as a talented artist in painting, photography, scriptwriting, decorations and clothing design for films and has also been a distinguished director.

Mohammed Ibrahim’s exhibition “Permanent Exhibition”: You will see a collection of paintings expressing the stages of the foundation of Arabic calligraphy.

This is a reconstruction of the old library of Alexandria, one of the largest libraries of its time, where the library was rebuilt on a site close to the old library in the al-Shatbi district.

The Library of Alexandria is the fourth largest French-language library in the world, and the second largest library with its contents after the New York Library, and the new library opened in 2002.

About the history of the new Library of Alexandria

From the inside, the BA contains many books in different modern languages: Arabic, English and French, and a selection of books in other European languages such as German, Italian, Spanish and other rare languages such as Crepoli, Haiti and Zulu.

The library also includes an Internet archive center with more than 10 billion pages, 1,000 documentaries, 2,000 hours of television broadcasts and 100 teras of information stored on 200 computers.

In addition to six specialized libraries, including the Library of Audiovisual Material, which covers various topics; educational, religious, cultural, political, documentary, film and the Library of the Blind,  which contains printed books in a braille.

In addition to a specialized library for children aged 6 to 12, it aims to encourage children to read and research, and the Youth Library, a specialized library for young people aged 12 to 18.

There are many activities that can be done, within the new Library of Alexandria, including what children can do by visiting the child’s library, reading books, and easily watching audiovisual material.

The microfilm library, which provides access to several manuscripts and various documents, as well as Egyptian dailies, can also be found from the date of publication until today.

In addition, the LIBRARY of Alexandria can also be visited from the inside to see rare books and private collections as the library contains an extensive collection of rare books belonging to the Library of Alexandria, which were printed before 1920, as well as several books dedicated to the library.

You can also visit the map library, which contains about 7,000 maps covering the world, the most important of which is the map drawn by Sharif Al-Idrissi in 1154 (Image of the Earth).

The most important activities that can be carried out within the library are the visit of the new museums of the library, where the library contains 6 museums, the most important of which is the Museum of Antiquities, which houses 1,080 pieces from different eras and civilizations passed by Egypt.

In addition, the Museum of Manuscripts, the Museum of Microfilm, the Department of Museums, the Museum of the History of Science, the Anwar Sadat Museum and the Shadi Abd elsalam Museum
