About the Amphitheatre of Alexandria

The Amphitheatre is in the Kom El-Dekka district of Alexandria Province, and it is like many terraces found in various countries such as Greece, Italy and Turkey, which were built in Roman times, but this is the only one of its kind that still exists in Egypt.

The Amphitheatre of Alexandria was discovered by accident in 1960, when workers went to remove a pile of dust and sand in 1960 to build a new government building, they found solid iron columns, suggesting that there might be something buried underneath. Immediately after, excavations began at the site of Kom El-Dekka, to discover the entire theater.

What was happening in The Roman Amphitheatre?

The Amphitheatre was used to host various artistic events such as concerts and various types of shows until the 7th century AD, including concerts and artistic events, but during the period of Islamic rule, the theater was neglected, until it was discovered in the middle of the 20th  century.

What do you see as soon as you enter?

Built in the 4th century AD, the Amphitheatre was a common feature in Roman times, and once you enter the theatre, you will see a track with a capacity of around 600 spectators.

This amphitheater reserved for the public is about 33 meters in diameter and consists of 13 rows of white European marble with the top, a gallery made of granite columns brought from Aswan, some of which still exist today.

The theater also has five stands at the top, used to accommodate VIP and wealthy TRADERS during the performances.

In the middle of the Roman theater there is a special section of the orchestra where musical performances are played, supported by two large marble columns and some of the best Roman mosaics on its floor.

Curiously, some research has shown that this building was not built to be a theater but was used for meetings of important personalities and officials or for special shows with a limited audience.

To the north of the Roman theater you can see, large clay brick structures and these are the ruins of the Roman baths built near the theater from the 2nd to the 4th century AD.

To the east of the Roman theater there is a villa belonging to the Roman emperor Hadrian, who ruled Egypt during the second century AD, which he called the “Villa of the Birds” because of the magnificent mosaic floor in the main room of the temple, which features many birds in different forms.
