What does the word “Abydos” mean?
- In hieroglyphics, it means: Abedjo.
- The Abydos region is the provincial capital of ancient Egypt.
- The area is named after the village of El Arraba El Madfuna.

- The architectural design of the temple is different from the rest of the Pharaonic temples, where the design was based on an existing plan rather than a rectangle.
- The temple was called Per Ankh and means the family home or home of life in ancient Egyptian.
- The temple was a sacred burial place for the ancient Egyptians to perform the last pilgrimage as they believed in the god Osiris.
- 14 workers’ graves were found next to the temple.

What are the reliefs depicting the legend of Isis and Osiris:
The texts and inscriptions on the walls of the legend were translated between three deities Isis, Osiris and Seth.
There was a struggle between Seth and Osiris over the king ship of Upper Egypt that Seth invited Osiris to a dinner party and then Seth managed to lock Osiris in a coffin and then threw him into a remote unknown place after cutting his body into 14 pieces.
Isis loved Osiris with all her heart, she decided to look for Osiris’ body until she managed to pick up all the pieces of his body, then she lay on the body and legend has it that she became pregnant with Osiris and gave birth to Horus.
Over time, Horus defeated Seth and he became the first to be the king of united Upper and Lower Egypt.
The interior plan of the temple of Abydos:
This temple was originally intended to be a luxurious building 520 feet long on the one hand, but the courtyard has open air and the facade were destroyed to the foundations, and only the temple remained with its side stones, and the columns carved in the form of a papyrus bud that formed its current facade, and in front of the hypostyle hall there are now nine existing columns and part of a tenth column, behind which is the wall of the sanctuaries.
The construction of the temple consists of two halls as the first has 24 round columns surmounted by capitals in the form of papyrus buds and the second hall with 36 columns holding three ceilings.
This temple is different from other temples, instead of having only one sanctuary or a structure of 3 sanctuarys, it contains seven chapels including that of the middle is consecrated to Amon Ra and on his side north sanctuaries of Osiris Isis and Horus, and on the west side there are the Shrines for Ra Hor AkhIt, Ptah and the King Sethi I himself.
On the side of the north wall of the temple are ruins of mud brick buildings that may have been warehouses of the temple.
All the inscriptions on the temple wall reflect the precision of Egyptian art, all preserved in their colors and the clarity of many fine details.
Temple of Osirion:
You will see a small building in a low land covered with water halfway, a water-filled channel rising at the time of the flooding of the Nile, where the grains that grow in the flood were placed as a symbol for the ancient Egyptians for the return of life after death.

This is a list of 76 names, from King Menes to King Sethi I, and in front of the list, King Sethi holds a tree and the king stands next to his son and Crown Prince Ramses II.

The town of Abejo Abydos, known as El-Arraba El Madfuna, is located 11 km southwest of El Baliana and has many monuments that illuminate historical times from the beginning of dynasties to the end of historical times.
Its importance is due to the construction of their tombs by the kings of ancient times on the edge of the desert, and a general feeling of glorification developed towards the holy places of the Pharaonic Tombs of the first pharaohs.
