King Senusret III, One of the kings of the Twelfth Dynasty, he ruled Egypt from 1878 to 1839 BC. King Senusret III is known as one of the greatest and most important pharaohs of the Middle Kingdom. Below we will mention the reason for giving him this name.

What is King Senusret III famous for?

  • In ancient times, the pharaoh was called “Sesostris III,” and the Greeks gave him this name.
  • Senusret III carried out a series of expansions for the Middle Kingdom of Egypt in the Nubia region on the banks of the Nile River.
  • He also built river castles, including Bohn and Toshki, which are located at Orunaarti.
  • There is an obelisk found in the Nubia region as well as Palestine that remembers his achievements.
  • Among the monuments that he also built is the castle currently located in the city of Byblos in Phenicia.
  • He also built the southern Samna Castle and the Qamna Fort in Aswan. There are also writings engraved in the granite rock near Aswan.
  • This rock was used to dig the canal of King Senusret III, in addition to his temple in the city of Abydos and the Temple of Madamud.

  • The pharaoh’s rule lasted for approximately 38 years, and his son, Amenemhat III, shared the rule with his father.
  • There is a collection of the Pharaoh’s works, including the first water canal in history linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean through the Nile.
  • It was called the Sesostris Canal “Canal of the Pharaohs”, and this canal led to an increase in Trade in Ancient Egypt between Egypt and Punt and between Egypt and the Mediterranean islands called Crete and Cyprus.
  • It also contributed to the advancement of agriculture, especially during the rule of the Middle Kingdom.

  • There is an existing painting documenting the victories he achieved against Nubia in the eighth year of his rule.
  • There is also another panel called the Panel of Senusret III in Semna, which refers to the sixteenth year of the king’s rule.
  • His last campaign was in the nineteenth year of his rule, but it was not the most successful. This was due to the king’s power being affected by the weak level of the Nile and their falling into the trap of the Nubians.
