SS Thistlegorm

The most important attractions of diving in Ras Mohammed Red Sea Egypt, the history and secrets of the shipwreck of the ship and how it became one of the most beautiful places to dive in Egypt.

Underwater tourist attractions, the most important trips in detail to dive into the wreck of Thistlegorm.

The wreck of the SS Thistlegorm is often considered the most famous wreck in the world, due to its well-preserved structure, as well as a wealth of rare artifacts from World War II with the recognition of the island of Al-Geftun in Hurghada.

In fact, this debris falls within the boundaries of recreational diving, where it is a must-see site for divers in this region, to explore the ruins and features of this distinctive ship sunk deep into the sea.

History of Thistlegorm

The SS Thistlegorm was built by Joseph Thompson & Sons in Sunderland, England; it was launched in June 1940. The ship was 415 feet long and rested on a 1,850 horsepower triple engine.

When the ship was called to war, a standard 4.7-inch anti-aircraft gun and a pre-World War II large-caliber machine gun were used, which were placed at the rear of the ship.

Sinking of Thistlegorm

Launched from her home in Glasgow, Scotland, in May 1941, the ship was full of equipment ranging from shoes and guns to motorcycles and locomotives and instead of crossing the Mediterranean and risking destruction by German ships, the convoy took a longer route around Africa on a journey of more than 12,000 miles.

When the ships finally arrived in the Sinai Peninsula in the third week of September, they found that a collision had closed the entrance to the Suez Canal. The ships were waiting at a place designated as “the safe anchor,” and it was there that German intelligence learned of their whereabouts, which he blew up on the night of October 5, 1941.

Diving in the Thistlegorm

Fishermen have been fishing off the Thistlegorm since the ship sank off the west coast of the Sinai Peninsula in the Gopal Strait, but its “discovery” belongs to the famous explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau, who documented his visit to the shipwreck with a film in 1955.

When you dive inside the ship, you’ll discover the presence of ammunition, weapons, and other tools from World War II, and you’ll find the missile in place 50 years ago, as well as the two anti-aircraft guns mounted on the deck.

On deck include monuments, captain’s cabins, anchors, tanks and cargo rails, and you will find many features of marine life scattered throughout the ship.

The wreck site has been selected as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world by the Federation of World Diving Organizations.

Where is this debris from Thistlegorm?

The wreck is 52 feet below the surface of the water and the exact location of the submarine can be found by the most experienced divers.

The sunken British military warship SS Thistlegorm north of Hurghada is one of the best dive sites attracting thousands of dive enthusiasts from all over the world.
