History of the Mosque of Sultan Al-Muayyad

• The Sultan tried in the past to build the mosque in a site known as “Shamael’s Treasury”, but the emir at that time purchased the site and demolished everything that was built from the mosque.
• Then, in the year 818 AH, the foundations of the mosque were started again, but in another area, which is where the mosque is located at the present time.
• The expenses of the mosque in the beginning was 40 thousand dinars, but the cost increased after that.
• A large library that was located in the citadel was transferred to a mosque, in addition to 500 volumes by the writer “Nasir al-Din Muhammad al-Barazi”.
• In the year 820 AH the cost began to increase until it reached 70 thousand dinars.
• Al-Mu’ayyad appointed scholars in the mosque to teach the four schools of thought, hadiths and medicine.

The design 

• The mosque has 4 iwans, and three of them have been renovated, and there is one of the four facades that still retains its ancient historical splendor.
• The iwans are windows made of marble, and there is a very wide entrance with a double staircase made of colored marble.
• The entrance comes from two large pieces made of red granite, and from inside the entrance comes turquoise and red marble.
• The eastern facade is the one that has not undergone renovation and contains decorations that cover the entire facade with different colors and inscriptions.
• There are two columns in red, each bearing gold-plated Arab capitals. There is also a large ornate minbar, but large parts of it have disappeared.

• The mosque was subjected to rapid damage, unlike the mosques that were built in such an era, and the reason for this was the attack of the mosque by Omar Pasha, the ruler of Egypt.
• Where Omar Pasha ordered the army to strike the mosque using cannons, so that it could remove the corrupt people inside it.
• After that, Ahmed Pasha reconstructed the mosque, and Ibrahim, the servant of the poor of Kalashni, renewed the mosque.
• The mosque reached a very poor state in the 19th century.
• The mosque was renovated in the era of Khedive Ismail by the Ministry of Endowments, and the facades that were subjected to ruin were also renewed.
• The dome was in need of repair, as well as the three facades were almost completely destroyed, and the two minarets in the mosque were missing the upper part of them.
• The Special Committee for the Preservation of Arab Antiquities preserved the remains of the mosque.
