An overview of the establishment of the School of Modern Art in the village of Harraniya
This school was established by Ramses Wissa Wassef, the founder of the Folk Art Center in Harraniya, who was born in 1911, and was interested in studying fine arts. In 1929, he traveled to France, joined the School of Fine Arts in Paris, and majored in architecture.
During one of Ramses Wissa’s trips to southern Egypt with the students of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, he noticed the splendor of the buildings in the Nubian villages that take the form of domes, so he decided to revive this authentic Egyptian character, so he accompanied a group of workers from Aswan; To construct the first chambers in the Harraniya area, in which he had begun to establish his center.

In 1970, Ramses Wissa resigned all the buildings in the Harraniyah district, since Harraniyah has been called the center of “popular art.”
In that village, you will notice that it was made by an artist, through the extreme distinction of its handicrafts of carpets and kilims spread to be displayed in the streets of the village.
According to the latest statistics, the population of the village is 5,260 people, 90% of whom work in the craft of weaving handmade carpets and tableaus inspired by the landscapes inside the village, which is located 15 kilometers from the ruins of Saqqara or about an hour and a half from the Giza road.
As for the materials used in the Harraniya Weaving Village, all of them depend mainly on nature, such as wool, cotton, and dyes all from nature, and all of them are present in the village, such as tea, beans, and camphor.
