Where is Tuna Mountain located?

● The Tuna El-Gabal area is located in southern Egypt in the Minya Governorate, which is 18 km from the western mountain in Mallawi. It is about 7 kilometers from the city of Hermopolis.

Why was the mountain tuna called that name?

● The name Tuna is believed to have been distorted from the old name of the area, which was called (Ta Went) meaning the land of the rabbit, or from (Tahnet), which meant the land of the pond or the lake, where there was a lake resulting from the occurrence of floods, which he called the holy lake. And because it is located on the western mountain, the word mountain was added to it.

When was the Tuna Al-Jabal area discovered?

● Archaeological expeditions began to explore the Tuna El-Gebel area since 1912. Excavations continued until an archaeological mission from the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University led by the Egyptian archaeologist Sami Gabra in 1931 discovered an entire underground city, catacombs and monuments in this area dating back to before the birth of Christ. In addition to important documents written in both Demotic and hieroglyphic languages ​​that speak of the god Thoth, and then successive discoveries in this region.

What are the monuments that can be seen in the Tuna Mountain area?

● The city of Tuna El-Gebel is the crossroads of three civilizations: the Pharaonic, the Greek and the Roman. In addition, it bears witness to modern history as well.
● Tuna al-Jabal includes the largest cemetery called the Ashmounite city cemetery, which is a group of tombs and catacombs that were dedicated to burying sacred birds and animals, such as the ibis, which was known in the past as the Apis, and also a type of sacred monkeys called the baboon, and each of them symbolizes a deity called Thoth God Wisdom and knowledge.
● The god Thoth was worshiped in a region called Thoth. Sacred animals were mummified and buried in a special way after their death, and catacombs were found to keep their eggs, and it was not permissible to kill them, as the penalty for killing them was death.
● The village contains 39 funerary houses, dating back to the fourth century BC until the second century AD.
● It contains the Roman waterwheel, the largest in existence so far. This waterwheel is considered a unique masterpiece of Roman engineering. The waterwheel ends with a well of 30 m depth.
● It contains a shrine called the Tomb of Isadora, a legend sanctified by the Greeks. It belongs to a Greek girl from a prestigious family who drowned in the Nile after trying to escape because she fell in love with an Egyptian officer and her father refused to marry him.
● Cemeteries of some of the senior men of the Pharaonic states, such as: The cemetery of the priest Anah Hur, the honorable priest for the burial and mummification of birds and monkeys. And the tomb of the high priest of the god Thoth, who was called Bitzers.
● Royal paintings dedicated to the cult of King Akhenaten.
● In the modern era, Taha Hussein from Tuna al-Jabal took a special rest for him after admiring the charming nature and calmness of this area. In 1931, he held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He was the one who gave the order to the archaeological mission to start excavation work and paid great attention to it.
● The Tuna Al-Jabal region inspired the writer Taha Hussein to write his wonderful novel, Dua’a Al-Karwan.
● This break turned into a cultural salon visited by many writers, intellectuals and kings as well. King Farouk passed by it during his visit to Aswan on his way to visit Aswan. And held many important seminars and ceremonies. This rest is still located in the Tuna Mountain area until now.
