Rommel Museum

The history of that cave dates back to the Roman era, where it was then used as a storehouse for wheat and barley, as well as a storehouse for water, and it was also successfully exported after that to the Roman states, as it had been used to supply ships and then provide them with the necessary supplies for the success of its proximity to the sea.
It was also chosen by the German general Erwin Rommel, who was later nicknamed the “Desert Fox” to serve as his headquarters later and a fortress to manage that fighting during the periods of World War II, and he was a smuggler from the cities of ruins if conditions worsened inside the battle.
And that cave remained deserted until the end of 1977 AD, and the Matrouh governorate began processing and preparing it after that as a museum, and in 1999 that museum was annexed to succeed in being affiliated with the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
However, it was closed after that for several long years in restoration and development operations, and then it was reopened to the public on August 25, 2017.

The belongings in the museum

This archaeological museum also includes a large collection of personal belongings of that General Rommel, which his son Manfeld Rommel gave to the Egyptian government in memory of him, and they were tools of war.
At the same time, it was about maps of military sites during the periods of World War II, in addition to a number of small arms that were war holdings, and that detailed map of the battle of “Ghazala”.
This museum also comes among all those holdings in the museum or the coat of that general, which is made of leather.
