About The Montaza Palace  Gardens

In 1892, the Khedive Abbas Helmi II visited the area of Sidi Bishr in Alexandria, which he loved so much, because of the sea view there, and the tranquil and wonderful atmosphere, from this place he chose a specific place located between two bridges with a small island to the north. At this moment, my dream decided to use this place in his summer residence and decided to build a palace and gardens there.

Above one of these outcrops, there were old cannons dating from the time of Mohammad Ali Pasha who put them there to defend the northern coast of Egypt, these cannons are still in the same place today where Helmy built the palace of Salamlek behind these cannons.

The other part of the prominence contained a coastguard center and built the Haramlek palace there. Helmi II also bought the house of Sindino, a wealthy Alexandrian merchant, added land to his complex and bought a lot of land from the inhabitants of the area to expand the area of his summer resort, and named it the Montaza this huge palace, which was named after  the  whole  neighborhood.

After the death of Abbas Helmi II, the royal family continued to take care of the Montaza Palace until the reign of the last king of Egypt King Farouk I, and then the Egyptian Revolution in 1952, where ownership of the palace was restored to  the state.
