God Montu

• The meaning of the name of the god Munto in the ancient Egyptian language is that he is a Bedouin, as he was interpreted as a wanderer on his face.
• Montu was one of the manifestations that was affected by the burning sun of the god Ra, and is most likely referred to in the name Montu Ra.
• He had a destructive ability derived from the sun, and this ability was the reason why he was considered a warrior until he became, with time, the god of war.
• There was a relationship between Montu and the god Buchis, due to the existence of a link between the raging bull with war, as the bull is a symbol of power in the past.
• So Montu came in the form of a bull in white, but the face was in black, and this bull was called Baja, or Buchis.
• For the fame of the god Montu, his title was included in the name of the greatest king of Egypt, who called himself the mighty bull, the son of Montu.
• There is a famous story that narrates the events of the Battle of Kadesh, in which the violence and power of Rameses II is likened to that of Monto, the god of Thebes.

• The ancient Egyptian art depicted Monto in the form of a man, but he came with the head of a falcon, and sometimes he came in Tyre with the head of a bull.
• The god Munto wears the disk of the sun between two pillars, and it is said that they are two feathers, and they are a reference to the sky and the bull, meaning strength and war.
• Some pictures came of the god Monto, who was carrying weapons in his hand, including arrows and bows, and some other pictures came carrying swords and knives.
• Regarding the temples of Montu, it is said that the Temple of Montu was built in the era of the Old Kingdom, and it is located approximately 8 kilometers to the northeast of Luxor.
• There are also temples dedicated to the god Munto, including the temple, which is located next to the Middle Kingdom on the island of “Wronarti” located under the second waterfall of the Nile.
• The history of this last temple dates back to the 19th century BC, specifically in the era of the New Kingdom.
• These were not the only temples of the god Montu, but there are also other large and interesting temples in Armant.

Wives of the god Montu

• The god Monto married several wives, including the goddess Eunette and the goddess Tannette.
• Among them is also the goddess Ra’it Tawi, an Egyptian goddess and the feminine version of the god Ra.
• The name Shepherd of the Two Lands means, which indicates that she was the goddess of Upper and Lower Egypt as well.
• The name Monto appeared in a group of other kings’ names, including “Mentuhotep”, one of the pharaohs of the Middle Kingdom.
• The son of the god Munto was Harbora who is associated with the sacred bull “Bukhis”.

• The Temple of Montu is located in the Karnak Temple, which contains 3 sections.
