Facts and Islamic Egypt History in Al-Aazam Street, the oldest historical street and the history of the Greater Cairo Kasbah, the most important tourist attractions and Islamic Egypt Archaeological Sites in Old Cairo, the price of the entrance ticket, working hours and more.

Al Muizz Street Facts

Al-Muizz Li-Din Allah Al-Fatimi Street, or as it is sometimes called the Great Street or another name, the Great Cairo Casbah, is nothing but a street that represents the heart of old Cairo, which had been previously developed to be an open museum for both Islamic Egyptian Antiquities and architecture.

Al-Muizz Li-Din Allah Al-Fatimi Street was established with the establishment of the city of Cairo, and that was during the era of the Fatimid state and their rule in Egypt. Al-Muizz Street was established at that time, and the layout of that city was crossed by a main street that extended from the Bab Zuweila area in the south to the Bab Al-Futuh area in the north, i.e. parallel to the Gulf area.

It was initially called the Great Street, but later it was called the Kasbah of Cairo, as it divided the city into two almost equal parts and was the political and spiritual center of the city..

But with that great transformation that Cairo witnessed in the early seventh century AH or thirteenth century AD, and during the Mamluk era, its name was changed to Al-Muizz Street..

The reason for naming it with that name

Al-Muizz Li-Din Allah Al-Fatimi Street was named Old in 1937 in honor of the founder of Cairo, and this name extends to this day from Bab Al-Futuh to Bab Zuweila, including, of course, Bab Al-Futuh streets.

And also with it the Emir of the Armies, and both of the coppersmiths, and between the two palaces, the goldsmiths’ area, the Ashrafieh area, and the Shawayin, both of the Akkadin, and the Manakhiya, and also the upholsterers, and finally the Sakaria in Bab Zuweila.

The current name also dates back to the era of the Fatimid Caliph Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah, whose origin and history of course go back to the region of the island of Sicily..

While he was born in the city of Mahdia in the year 319 AH, the city of Cairo is also named after him.

He was pledged allegiance to take over the caliphate in the city of Morocco, and at that time he was the first Fatimid caliph to be able to enter Egypt, after its conquest in the year 358 AH..

It is one of the gates of the walls in Cairo. It was built to control all entrances to Cairo in the Fatimid era, and was built using towers of Pharaonic stone.

Bab Zuweila in 1092 AD

Bab Zuweila is one of the gates in the walls of Cairo. It was made up of a very deep and huge building block, reaching a height of approximately 24 meters, which is higher than the original level of Al-Muizz Street..

Al-Hakim Mosque 990-1013 AD

The mosque was built during the reign of King Al-Aziz Billah Al-Fatimi, who began its construction in the year 379 AH / 989 AD, but unfortunately he died before completing the construction, so his son Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah completed its construction in the year 403 AD..

Therefore, it was later attributed to him and from that time it became known as Al-Hakim Mosque. It is the second and most important Historical mosques in Cairo in terms of size, followed by the historic Mosque of Ibn Tulun.

Al-Aqmar Mosque, built in 1125 AD

It is considered the smallest mosque in Cairo, and it is also considered an authentic architectural masterpiece, as it is the only mosque that is actually lower than ground level..

It is also the first mosque that we found whose facade was parallel to the street’s regulatory line, instead of being parallel to the courtyard, so that the dome would take its correct position..
